AWEC’s Fifteenth Anniversary Conference was held September 16-18 in Raleigh, North Carolina  at the Embassy Suites Raleigh-Durham Airport/Brier Creek. A wonderful Friday night reception sponsored by The Keefe Group kicked off the conference.  AWEC Members and graduates of the 2011 Emerging Executives Training gathered for a time of fellowship, renewal of old friendships, and kindling of new professional relationships.  

Members attended some exciting sessions. One of the most popular sessions featured keynote speaker Wilma L. Vaught, Brigadier General USAF, (retired).

The Susan M. Hunter Award Luncheon, sponsored by Union Supply Group,  highlighted the accomplishments of this year’s award recipient, Sharon Johnson Rion, retired President of TransCor America. 

The Legacy Brunch sponsored by CenturyLink, showcased Mary Livers’ accomplishments as she was presented with the 2011 Legacy Award.

AWEC’s 2011 Emerging Executive (E2) Training Institute, Supported by National Institute of Corrections

AWEC is proud to have sponsored the Fifth Annual Emerging Executives Training Institute in Raleigh, North Carolina. After the entire day-long session, participants were invited to a special reception for graduates of the Emerging Executive Training Institute and AWEC’s membership sponsored by The Keefe Group  

This executive leadership training was  open to women at a mid-management level in any corrections field, including but not limited to probation, parole, community corrections, jails, and prisons. Committed to a philosophy of ‘Each One Teach One,’ AWEC  utilized the rich experience of its senior membership, who are top level executive women, as featured speakers in the Emerging Executive Training Institute.  

E2 participants were welcomed by AWEC President, Annie Harvey, who presented a history of AWEC, and Immediate Past-President Francine Perretta, chair of the E2 program which is a past presidents’ initiative. Dr. Diane Schlachter, President/CEO of OAR Inc. in Georgia,  facilitated the session which was sponsored by AWEC and NIC. AWEC Immediate Past President, Francine Perretta, Deputy Commissioner, Weschester County (NY) Probation, was the featured luncheon speaker. Viki C. Sharp, Director of Victims’ Services , New York City Department of Corrections, presented a session entitled ” Remember the Sunroom.” A panel of AWEC members discussed how they managed challenging experiences in women’s leadership. Panel members were Brenda Murrell, Chief of Prisons, Georgia DOC, retired; Helen Marberry, Assistant Director, Prog ram Review Division, FBOP; Patricia L. Caruso, Director, Michigan DOC, retired; Darla Elliott, Sr. Director of Programs, Corrections Division, Managment Training Corporation.
